The 2017 production of Iolanthe with the English National Opera was my first opportunity to work with Cal McCrystal. Given the slapstick comedic nature of the show, as well as the comedy genius of Cal McCrystal, I was required to choreograph a lot of physical action, slapstick combat, rope swings, and falls throughout this show.
One of the more interesting challenges in this production involved a full sized train crashing through the back wall onto the stage, quickly followed by a cast member falling off the top of the train.
I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Cal on a number of shows since 2017, and I have learned a great deal about comedy, timing, and what makes a scene funny from working so closely with Cal.
